Avoiding Pimples for Prom
(& Other Special Occasions)
Hair and make-up? Check!
Complexion? Keep it in check!
Why is it that whenever a special occasion comes along, a big zit breaks out right in the middle of your forehead...or on the end of your nose...or another conspicuous place? It's not a coincidence that when you want to look your best, a little something pops up to spoil your fun.
Acne can happen for many reasons; stress is a big problem for your skin.
Pimples are simply inflammations of the skin. The sebaceous (oil) glands at the base of your hair follicles create sebum. Bacteria occurs naturally in the sebum created, however if a pore is blocked, the oil and bacteria can be trapped, causing it to swell and pus. This commonly occurs on the face, back, chest, and shoulders.
Unfortunately the sebaceous gland can become overactive and create more sebum. Possible triggers include puberty, heredity, diet, and of course, stress and anxiety. There are things you can do to help keep your skin clear through these times.
Cleansing: Use a mild soap to wash the surface of your skin gently - but no more than twice daily. Experts suggest an over-the-counter lotion containing benzoyl peroxide to help with the removal of dead skin that may otherwise clog pores. Be sure to remove all traces of makeup before going to bed. Avoid touching your face and keep your hands and nailbeds clean.
Keep hair clean: Hair is naturally oily so keep it pulled back away from your skin, if possible. Avoid products, which may cause your hair to become greasy.
Keep covered: Too long in the sun can cause overactive oil glands. Wear a wide brimmed hat and loose clothing so your skin can breathe. Wash headbands, caps, and scarves often.
Diet: A diet high in glycemic index foods and dairy products is now linked to acne. Avoid them in the time leading up to your event. Drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin naturally.
Schedule facials and other services well in advance: Having all your appointments scheduled can reduce pressure and anxiety (so lessens your stress). Book a facial treatment for the week prior to your big event so your skin is clear, silky smooth, and even toned. Having smoother, fresher skin also allows for a flawless makeup application the day of your event.
Stay calm and enjoy this exciting time: Meditate, write in a journal, or de-stress with a relaxational massage. Stay at ease and enjoy the time leading up to your event, rather than worry about every detail last minute.
